Ballroom/Multipurpose

Ballroom & Multipurpose spaces come in a variety of sizes and configurations, as typically found in hotels, HOA clubhouses, and private clubs. Minimal acoustic performance requirements center around speaker-to-audience speech transmission index (STI) as well as conversation-acceptable ambient noise levels with the room occupied to maximum seating capacity. For the most part, these basic requirements are readably attainable with a combination of standard acoustical ceilings and floor carpets, together with basic PA speaker systems.

Some spaces, particularly those stage-equipped, will have additional requirements revolving around clarity of amplified musical groups as well as projection of un-amplified musical instrumental ensembles. Additionally, the facility may need to support robust audience group singing. In-depth acoustical analyses are then called for, including integration of more sophisticated speaker systems and electronics.

The following case study describes the successful design and implementation of acoustical and electronics modifications to the Cascades-of-Sarasota ballroom. The community had just completed an extensive re-decoration of its fifteen year old clubhouse and ballroom.  With high coffered ceiling, elegant woodwork, modern chandeliers, and mirrored side columns, the facility was very striking.  However, the community continued to struggle with the ballroom’s inferior acoustics!
