Listening Experiences, Room Simulations headphones only

Speech intelligibility is the focus of these listening simulations. The Ballroom facility must operate with very different speaker systems, with visiting bands typically bringing in point-source type speakers:

-> House Speakers: vertical line arrays (Bose MA12EX, stacked 2 meter)

-> Visiting Speakers: point sources (QSC K12.2, typical)

Speech Transmission Index room plots with these two configurations were displayed with and without room treatment, under “Client Briefing.”

The four binaural headphone listening files below are for these two speaker systems, with/without room treatments, listening from mid room.  For reference purposes the approximate mid-band room reverb times are 1.4 seconds, untreated, and 1.1 seconds, treated. This reduction is particularly beneficial for point-source type units. With treatment rear wall reflections are also greatly reduced, which benefits both speaker types. Particularly dramatic is the contrast between: a) Visitor Speaker, No Treatment and b) House Line Array, Treated: effectively before and after A-E’s adjustments and modifications.

In addition to events with amplified sound, the upgraded acoustics of the ballroom have proven excellent for a variety of un-amplified instrumental ensembles. Several such events were captured wth binaural microphones, among them a 2024 performance of the State College of Florida (Sarasota-Manatee) jazz trio. The Zoom H3-VR mic was placed about fifty-five feet back from the stage. In headphone playback this binaural recording demonstrates the power, clarity and envelopment of the treated ballroom, with un-amplified ensembles.
